True Freedom

Happy Birthday, America! You are two hundred–thirty seven years old today!

14550-happy-fourth-of-julyAnother milestone in the history of this great nation. Great because this country’s history is deeply rooted in the battle for freedom. Freedom of religion. Freedom of speech. Freedom to live and move without the fear of terror or bondage. Freedom from the dictates of governments gone astray.

We want to be free, yet often take for granted the great price freedom cost others. War upon war and thousands upon thousands of lives lost, birthed the nation we call the United States of America. The war cry and words of Patrick Henry—“Give me liberty or give me death”—still echoes in the hearts of many who believe in one nation under God.

There’s another freedom easily taken for granted. The freedom of soul and spirit made possible by the Son of God who invaded this earth over 2,000 years ago. Born of a virgin, Jesus came to earth to proclaim what true freedom is.

His message was love—*For God so loved.
His message was repentance—*Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
His message was—*You must be born again to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus carried that message all the way to a cruel cross where He laid down His life for you and me.

Dottie Rambo sang it like this:

He left the splendor of heaven
Knowing His destiny
Was the lonely hill of Golgotha
There to lay down His life for me
If that isn’t love
Then the ocean is dry
There’s no stars in the sky
And the little sparrows can’t fly
If that isn’t love
Then heaven’s a myth
There’s no feeling like this
If that isn’t love

Born on the 4th of July, I am grateful for the privilege of celebrating my birthday on the same day America celebrates hers.

I was born again in my late twenty’s. For over forty years, I’ve celebrated the day Jesus invaded my life—not by force—

By invitation. When I invited Him into my heart, Jesus moved in and took up residence through His Spirit. I have found Him to be the source of true freedom; *”for in Him we live and move and have our being”.

Today as I remember those who laid down their lives for America, I also remember the One who laid down His life for you and me. The One who promised, *“You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”.

Now that’s true freedom!

*Scripture passages taken from John 3; Matthew 4: 17; Acts 17:28; John 8:32
